- Millions of children in Africa suffer because of HIV\Aids.
- It has been called ”the plague” of our generation.
- Children are the most vulnerable in this epidemic
- Not choosing to be affected or infected by HIV\AIDS.
- Not able to help or care for themselves when affected
TYPE OF CARE
We strive for excellence by providing not only the best physical care, but also emotional and
spiritual care to the children entrusted to us. Our aim is to always act in the best interest of the child.
The children receive care according to their individual needs. For example, they are taken to
speciality clinics at Red Cross and Tygerberg Hospitals in Cape Town, physiotherapy, speech
therapy, psychologists, etc. The children also visit the Infectious Disease Clinic at Paarl East
Hospital, as well as other local clinics. Educare staff provides the necessary stimulation for the
children’s development in our in-house créche.
Most of the children in our care are on anti-retroviral medicine, with positive results. The children
follow a healthy diet supervised by a dietician. Hygiene is a high priority in the house.
STAFF
The project is under the direction of a manager and social worker that report to the Miqlat Board of
Directors. A qualified nursing sister supervises all medical aspects.
Other staff: Currently 10 caregivers (working 12 hour shifts), 2 Educare staff and 1
housekeeper/cleaner are employed.
Relief (non-permanent) workers are used as needed. Volunteers from the community are also
welcome.

HOME BASED CARE
As much as health and family situations allow, we work towards re-uniting children with their
families. This includes following up on them to ensure that an acceptable standard of care is
provided in the home. A number of children are currently being cared for and supported at their
homes in the community. These families are visited to assess that medication is being given correctly
and that other physical needs, such as food and clothing, are being met. Furthermore, emotional
support and counseling are provided. As a result, Miqlat is seeing people’s dignity being restored
through love, physical support and training of life skills
FINANCES
As a registered non-profit (Section 21A) organisation, Miqlat is dependent solely on donations.
Donors receive receipts, which may be used for tax exemption. An independent company, Price
Waterhouse Coopers, audits annual financial statements.

FUTURE PLANS
We see this as a pilot project, and aim to open similar care facilities in Africa to supply a growing
need for the care of children infected with or orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Due to the many successes
and demands from the community, Miqlat Bowy House unfortunately has a waiting list of children
needing care. Our vision is to acquire another facility in the community.
PARTNERS
Miqlat welcomes and is thankful for the community’s involvement, whether material, financial or
physical. We believe in networking and we appreciate the partnership of individuals, companies,
hospitals and other community organisations.
